organic tshirts

Organic garments are those made from sustainable textiles. At this point there is still a hazy definition of what sustainable textiles are. The pure definition is that organic tshirts, pants and other clothing should be made from plants that are organically grown. The USDA defines organic produce as one that contains 95% ingredients produced without conventional fertilizers or synthetic pesticides. Like organically produced fruits and vegetables, organic clothing involves no synthetics.

There are those who will include garments made from recycled materials in their definition of organic garments. From their point of view, a dress made from an old umbrella or eco-fleece made from old plastic soda bottles is organic. I think, these people are confusing organic sustainable garments with eco-friendly materials. Just because it is made from recycled materials does not make it organic. The USDA definition should be clear enough. 95% of the ingredients should be produced without synthetic components.
